-
A member of a peculiar confraternity or association of robbers and assassins formerly prevalent in India, principally in the central and northern provinces. The Thugs roamed about in bands, decoyed travellers and others into retired spots and there plundered and murdered them, preferably by strangulation, and only by the shedding of blood when forced by circumstances. Their motive was not so much lust of plunder as certain religious ideas, and of their spoil one-third was devoted to the goddess Kali, whom they worshipped. In 1830 the British government took vigorous measures for their suppression, and Thuggery, as an organized system, may be said to be completely extinct. The name thug is now applied to habitual swindlers, pickpockets and worthless characters generally.
