Syn.: membranous croup. An acute infectious disease, due to the presence of the bacilli of diphtheria and characterized by the formation of a membranous, fibrinous, whitish or grayish deposit at the seat of infection. The lesion generally affects the throat and often nasal passages and the larynx, and the symptoms and visceral lesions are produced by a soluble toxin formed at the local seat of infection by the diphtheria bacillus.
